Week 7-Fifth Grade

Week 7 Fifth Grade

My Name is Yun Jin (Fiction, Level 15, Stage 3) by Catherine Murphy

A little boy who moved to a new place and felt different from everyone else for a while, a bully who pointed out his differences day after day, and a new way to make friends wherever you might end up – that’s what we read about this week in My Name is Yun Jin.

The activity I want to highlight this week is the reading discussion guide for reading the book across 5 days. The following are a few of our favorite questions and prompts: What do you know about dried fish, pickled cabbage, kimchi, bully, and American? Compare Yun Jin’s new home with his old home. Discuss Apba, customer, social studies projects, and Asia. Now that Yun Jin has had a problem with a bully, what do you think will happen next? Discuss the happenings at Korean Cultural Hall and Apba’s attitude about tae kwon do. What do you think Mr. Kim’s words meant? Why is An American Problem a good title for Chapter 3? Who is your favorite character in the book and why? As usual, we learned way more than just reading comprehension this week!
